2007... Sally's third novel for adults is published. This is the saga of
one family from the Second World War through to the seventies, the widowed
mother's yearnings and the child of hers that had been adopted in the war.
The characters and situations feel lifelike to anyone who experienced those
years. The narrative reads as if drawn from a real world.
The Beamish Boy
Romantic Drama by Sally Miall
Squadron-Leader
Philip Wickham RAFVR was shot down over Germany, leaving a widow, Margaret.
She was pregnant. There was one child already, three-year-old Susan. They
had been so happy, living in a rented cottage near the airfield. When the
baby was born, he was called Phil too after his father. Then there was
Jeff Beamish. His father died at Narvik, and his mother Sylvia, Margaret’s
best friend, was killed in an air raid. The war years ended with the Beamish
boy adopted into the Wickham family, into the saga of their growing up
years.

12th December
2006... We would say "the long-awaited" follow-up from Sally Miall, but
it's only three months since the publication of the first one, Both were
written in the 80s, but both seem as fresh as when they were written. Sheep
May Safely Graze looks from the cover note like a light romance but the
old man's secret creates an undertow of suspense from the beginning of
the book. What on earth has he done? When all is revealed, the shock is
no less for the long build-up.
Sheep May Safely Graze
Romantic drama by Sally Miall
London,
1968. Bruno Simpson, architect, reads in The Times of the death of Donatus
Heveridge, famous author and a good friend. The funeral will be at Heverden,
the family home. Bruno's ex-wife, Helen, one of the Heveridge clan, will
certainly be there. Memories of his failed marriage are still painful for
Bruno. Bravely, he decides to go to the funeral. But Helen isn't there.
So
who's this attractive young woman, playing the flute over Donatus' grave?
It's Annabelle James. Bruno remembers her as a skinny child, on a seaside
holiday many years ago. A new beginning, happiness maybe.
Meanwhile
Donatus Heveridge, deceased, expects special treatment in the Afterworld.
But his sins are not forgotten. |
