From : Anthony Bicknell <abicknell1@yahoo.co.uk>

Hi there.

I heard about your site though my brother Richard Bicknell, though I don't think he has been in contact with you or signed your guest book yet! I have however noticed that my cousin Steve Bicknell (in spain!) has
signed up.

I thought you might like a little bit of info on my family. I was born, bred and still reside in Hemel Hempstead, Herts. My father is Paul Bicknell born in North London and son of Albert Frederick Bicknell (who
is sadly no longer with us). Paul has one Brother Steve Bicknell Snr (also in Spain!) and two sisters Jane Bicknell (now Jane White) and Beverley Bicknell (now Beverley Finnie).

There are rumours that my Grandad Bert Bicknell and his sister Rose Bicknell are somehow related to the comedian Brian Connelly, but I'm not sure how...

I've noticed you are into your motorsport, which is of mutual interest to us lot! My family has also lived and breathed cars from a young age. Bert Bicknell owned a petrol station in Hemel Hempstead during the
60's and 70's until my Dad took it over for a while. I am very shortly about to follow in the footsteps with my first garage!

Anyway...keep up the good work on the site and please  get in touch if you know of any other Bicknells connected to us...

Cheers, Anthony Bicknell
and a reply from the editor!

Thanks for the email. Very interesting and I was pleased to hear from you. I have put your email on the forum and apologise for the software not working at the moment.

Was Bert Bicknell the one who ran Bicknell's Corner garage on the old A1? Or was that different? And did he race Copper 500cc cars and a special in the 50s? I have an article about that somewhere.

I do not have any of your relations on my database and would love to add them there. Then when someone else contacts me I can more easily see who is related to whom and can put you in touch. For this purpose please send me each person's full name, date and place of birth and death, same with spouses and marriage place and date. Thanks. Please also let me know if you want to keep it confidential for any reason (although so much is available on the internet nowadays but I like to ask).

I cannot be certain yet where you fit. All the Bicknells I have been in contact with are either Bridgewater, Taunton or Farnham Bicknells, except possibly the clan based aroung Warwick and the West Midlands from which the cricketing brothers come. I would like to be able to fit you guys in. I know a Rose Bicknell living in Winchester but she is probably younger than your grandmum.

It will take a while to piece this together but I would love to make a start.

All the best, Marcus

The Hendersons (Jenny Henderson)
From:The Hendersons <hendersonfamily@ukonline.co.uk>

Dear Marcus,

I am descended from Elhanan Bicknell. I think you have been in touch with my mother Phillippa Hunter Johnston and her sister (my aunt) Monica Bicknell Lightwood, daughters of Laurance Ray, son of Laura Bicknellperhaps Ive skipped a generation or two! There is some
connection with David Roberts too.

Monica has a huge volume of photographs, inside and out, of Cavendish House on Clapham Common where Elhanan (or was Henry Sanford?) livedowards the end of the 19th century. As Im sure you know, Cavendish House was demolished, so this is a very valuable record. I arranged for
copies of the entire collection to be taken and lodged at the Mine Library in Lambeth or perhaps it was in the Lambeth Archives, but I also have copies of a few of the photos here, showing the pictures and a lovely marble bust of a pretty young woman in a veil (a most remarkable
work actually, because of the diaphanous quality of the veil inconceivable in stone, and yet there it is!) that are still in the family (all with Monica at her home in Berkshire) and some views of the house and garden. Are you interested?

When I was a student, I lived for two years at a London University hall of residence on Clapham Common, only a hundred yards or so from where Cavendish House was; no doubt that is why Cavendish Road, now part of the South Circular is so called.

Outside the public library on the north side of Clapham Common there is a piece of stone which was found in the garden of Cavendish House I forget exactly what it is and of what date, but definitely a Roman memorial stone of some sort.

I wondered if you knew that there are Bicknells here in Coxley, near Wells in Somerset. Graham Bicknell is a farmer, about my age (50 ish), his father, Eric has sadly lost his mind and has been out of action for 12 years or so. I triedto interest them in your work a few years ago, so
perhaps they made contact. If not Ill try again, as I know them better now. Interestingly the local pronunciation of their name tends to be Binknell. I wonder if this has happened before elsewhere and has become fixed in writing, producing another variation on the name.

I enjoyed exploring your website - do put a brief entry in the visitors book on my behalf if you like.

Best wishes,

Jenny Henderson,

and a reply from the editor
Dear Jenny
Thanks for the very interesting email (below). We have been in Norway for a week so please excuse the delay in replying.
No, I don't think I have been in touch with your mother and aunt because they were not on my family tree. I have added them,
and you, and I attach a pdf print out of the complete tree of Henry Sanford Bicknell. I can provide you with this in print out form
if you like, and the larger tree electronically. David Roberts the artist was Henry's father in law.
We are in touch with several others in Henry Sanford's line including (from left to right)
* Frank Arthur Bicknell and his family,
* your second cousin Nick Ray (architect in Cambridge), descended from Laura May Bicknell like you, and
* Richard Holborow Stanton, (lawyer in London)
They are on copy so you have their emails. Which of them did you know about?
I would be very grateful for more information about individuals in your family, everyone from Laura down if you have them.
Date and place of birth, date and place of marriage, full name and DOB of spouses and children please. It all helps build up
a picture when someone else contacts me in the future. The photos of Cavendish House are of interest and I would love to
see copies of some of them. Can you or Monica scan and email some? It was Henry Sanford's house I think, as his father
Elhanan lived in Herne Hill. There is a well know bust of Henry Sanford's stepmother Lucinda, with copies around, but your
bust might be a different one. I do not remember seeing one with a veil.

The other Bicknells near you are also of great interest. There are at least five branches of the Bicknell family in Britain,
of which four (Bridgwater, Farnham, Taunton and Woolavington) are recorded in depth on my family tree. The fifth is the
Midlands branch, to which the cricketers Martin and Darren belong. But there are no proven links between any of the five
branches yet, although I live in hope. I do not know of a Wells branch so I would assume Eric and Graham are Taunton
Bicknells, as you are. Neither are recorded so I wonder if you know them well enough to get their family trees down in case
they fit somewhere? Anyway, lovely to hear from you and I hope we can be in touch soon with some more detail.
Best regards

Marcus

Comment: I have just found the site, and would like to add more to my family history. I have traced my lineage back to 1786 at Southam Warwickshire, and I am interested in confirming all data before 1851. I would also like to meet any local contacts. I would appreciate contact with any other Bicknells in England researching their family tree.

Comment:     Such detail! I only stumbled across the site by entering my name in a Google search.  Unfortunately, I know very little of my background. I was born in Portsmouth, Hants. on 21.7.36. My father was George Percival Bicknell (born in Portsmouth 1.02.1901). His older brother was Charles Bicknell (no details). They were the sons of Charles and Maria(?) Bicknell (no details), both of whom I believe to have died before I was born. I always understood that we had distant relatives in the Aldershot area, but never met them.
For some inexplicable reason, I have always been closer to my mother's family. She was Phyllis Mary Sansom of Lytchett Minster in Dorset (born 11.02.1911).
Forgive me for intruding. I imagine I must fit into the overall picture somewhere!
Kindest regards,
Peter "Hamish" Bicknell (currently in retirement in West Sussex)
PS: I shall return when I have more time!
