K Sports 1600 Championship
So you fancy trying a low-cost slicks and wings category, but donít like the thought of single-seaters. Donít worry, there is a class for you, and it remains one of the best-kept secrets in motor racing.
K Sports 1600 is not the newest kid on the block in terms of racing categories. In fact, its heritage stretches back to the early days of Clubmans racing more than 30 years ago. Yet while other series have come and gone, this one has stood the test of time with only minor tweaking to keep it current.
The concept is pretty simple; take a spaceframe chassis
for an open sports-racer, put a 1600cc Rover K Series engine in the front,
fit bodywork and a rear wing, and away you go. Fast, close racing in cars
that are incredibly economical in relation to performance is the result.
Ever since Clubmans racing was born, the Mallock
marque has dominated. And that remains true today, with their cars from
a twenty-year period still winning races in 2000. The spaceframe chassis
is strong, easier to repair than a monocoque, and readily updated when
Richard Mallock and his team come up with a new tweak.
With the K series lump in basically standard trim, a choice of non-sequential gearboxes ñ faithful old BMC units are still popular ñ and control Dunlop slicks, the whole package is carefully cost-controlled,
But one of the best things of all about K Sports 1600, is that the competitors are a genuinely friendly bunch who work hard to protect what they have. For more details contact Chris Hart of the Clubmans Register on 0114 263 1869.
